Column: CEO Learnings
For more than two decades, I’ve been a part of the career-transition ministry at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Danville, CA, helping more than 6,000 individuals, spanning different faiths and age groups, embark on their journey to the next phase of their lives since the Dot.com crash in 2002.
Our programs focused on helping participants navigate the six steps to transition to success. These included:
- Programs that help to recognize and deal with hopelessness and helplessness, anger and denial, and other negative emotions that interfere with our being able to move forward in life. A positive attitude with no emotional baggage is a key to success.
- Programs focused on self-assessment; figuring out our strengths, skills, experience, etc. – our gifts that we can use to create value in whatever we choose to do.
- Programs designed to develop the “marketing materials” needed to communicate our uniqueness: branding; the “marketing one pager”; the LinkedIn profile; resume writing; and the use of social media.
- Programs to improve and reinforce networking skills. Networking (80% of all jobs come from networking) is the biggest stumbling block for most participants.
- Programs to enhance Interviewing and negotiation skills; handling objections; dealing with age issues; dealing with “over experienced” issues; and negotiating a comp package.
- Job market information. – who is hiring, who are they hiring, and where are the hiring.
