Ater repeated attempts, including an April 7th letter sent privately, Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of San Francisco today publicly bans Nancy Pelosi (D, CA) from receiving Holy Communion due to her continued public, outspoken abortion advocacy while also publicly claiming to be Catholic. But there’s more to the story….
True to the meaning of his Italian last name (Cordileone means “the heart of a lion”), and after repeated attempts and encouragements urging Pelosi to uphold the teachings of Christ regarding human life and dignity (not to mention common-sense), Pelosi’s archbishop made public a letter he sent to Pelosi regarding this matter more than a month earlier.
God Bless the Lion-Hearted Archbishop Cordileone for his public act regarding a very public Catholic figure who has been promulgating anti-Catholic and anti-human life policies for many years, all while publicly making it well-known that she is Catholic.
Read here the full text of the Archbishop’s Notification to Nancy Pelosi. It had been sent privately to Pelosi last month. Today the Archbishop formally banned Pelosi from receiving Holy Communion (as he had warned her in his Notification) until she, basically, repents and publicly renounces her support of infanticide and abortion. Archbishop Cordileone released his Notification letter to Pelosi publicly due to Pelosi’s refusal to renounce her continued, aggressive and very public support of abortion while very publicly claiming to be Catholic.
Canon 915
In case you’re wondering, it is the responsibility and decision of the local bishop or archbishop to take such actions. The decision is fundamentally based on the extent to which a public figure’s actions, behavior or words are deemed by the local ordinary to cause severe harm to a person’s soul or influence others to be misled about the truth. In Canon Law, this is detailed in Canon 915.
